In the era of digital innovation, global construction equipment and industrial vehicle companies are fiercely competing to apply cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to their vehicles and equipment. Korean construction equipment and industrial vehicle companies are also stepping on the accelerator to add innovative capability to their portfolios with Software-Defined off-highway Vehicle (SDoV) at their core.
Since 1999, the company has focused on developing a dedicated electrical system for domestic construction equipment and industrial vehicles. We met with Yong Jun Chang, CEO of Kyungwoo Systech, who has led the domestic construction equipment and industrial vehicle information and communication technology (ICT) innovation for 25 years to hear about future business strategies.
Dr. Chang emphasized the need for equipment innovation in the construction and industrial sectors. He said, “Work efficiency and safety are critical factors in construction equipment and industrial vehicles,” and explained, “SDoV is a platform that provides continuous updates and customized functions through software (SW) that goes beyond the physical limitations of hardware, and can continuously improve vehicle performance, safety, and user experience.”
He added, “It maximizes equipment operation efficiency with SW updates, enables predictive maintenance with data analytics, and ultimately contributes to reducing the overall cost of ownership.” He added, “In particular, it is possible to prevent downtime by blocking risk factors at the work site and monitoring equipment status with edge AI technology operating at the equipment level.”
He introduced the ‘KLION Project’ for SDoV conversion. Dr. Chang said, “The KLION Project provides the automotive electronics solutions necessary for implementing SDoV with software, connectivity, and AI technology.” He added, “The KLION solution under development is designed to make it easy for small and medium-sized equipment manufacturers to integrate various cutting-edge technologies into their machines to improve overall efficiency and functionality.”
Through the project, the company is developing an AI-connected digital cluster. Its products comprehensively recognize the work environment through integration with various sensors.
Workers can build an optimized work environment on-site through AI processing of collected data. The digital cluster will have the functionality of transmitting AI analysis data to the server through connectivity technology and providing remote vehicle management.
Kyungwoo Systech was recently recognized for its technological innovation. It gave a presentation on the topic of SDoV implementation at the iVT EXPO held in Chicago, USA. After the announcement, there were many inquiries from global customers about the introduction of technology. This is why he is proud of the company’s competitiveness as a leader in the SDoV sector.
The company will launch SDoV products later in the year and begin to promote the solution in the global market. He said, “There is a lot of interest in SDoV technology in the US market, which prioritizes functionality and efficiency,” and “We will establish a roadmap for the North American market and carry out active sales and marketing activities.” He added, “In Korea, we plan to participate in the Korea International Construction Equipment Show held at KINTEX in Gyeonggi Province next month and introduce various new products, including the first KLION product line, the ‘AI Connected Digital Cluster.’”
